When you think of Nuclear power plants you think of hazardous areas right? But did you know that Pyropress supplies industrial switches and transmitters to the nuclear industry for their reliability and strength, not for their hazardous area compliance. Here’s why.
Hazardous areas are defined in ATEX, or DSEAR in the UK, as “any place in which an explosive atmosphere may occur in quantities such as to require special precautions to protect the safety of workers”. This refers to atmospheres containing flammable gas or dust and is different to nuclear hazards.
The switches and transmitters that we supply to the nuclear industry can be used for process control applications. In this case, because there are no flammable gases, vapours, powders or dust present in the air there is no need for ATEX compliant flameproof or intrinsically safe equipment.
So why do nuclear power plants choose Pyropress switches and transmitters?
What nuclear operations do need in these applications are ultra reliable, robust, tough switches and transmitters that will last for generations. Component failure and replacement presents different types of hazards.
That’s why our SIL 2/SIL 3 (Safety integrity level) switches and transmitters can be found in nuclear power applications. Transmitters such as the PYRP-2000, for example, are used to monitor the level of water in silos at the nuclear site remotely, delivering the required data.
Pyropress products for a wide range of applications
The complete Pyropress range of switches for “safe” industrial use includes pressure switches, differential pressure switches, vacuum switches, temperature switches, level switches, and flow switches. Pressure and temperature transmitters are also available.
For applications that are classified as Zone 0, 1, 2, 20, 21 or 22 hazardous areas, Pyropress offers a range of specialist, robust and weatherproof ATEX/IECEx/UKEx, or intrinsically safe, switches and transmitters.
We design and manufacture products for a range of arduous industry applications including nuclear, coal, and oil and gas power stations, nuclear waste handling facilities, onshore and offshore oil and gas production, manufacturing/production operations, HVAC/refrigeration, hydrogen and biofuel operations.
